The story behind Sedrick’s Adventures in Hopeland.

How a boy with a big heart and an even bigger imagination came to life

Every adventure begins with a spark, and this is how Sedrick’s spark lit up my world.

Sedrick is a fun-loving, curious 7-year-old boy with a heart of gold. He’s brave, he’s kind, and he has a knack for finding excitement wherever he goes. There’s just one thing… Sedrick isn’t real. At least, not in the everyday sense. He’s a character from my imagination—but when I write about him, it’s almost like he’s sitting right next to me, grinning from ear to ear.

The day Sedrick arrived…

It was December 2022, and for the first time in ages, I had slowed down enough to actually breathe. I was sitting in my favourite tearoom (poetic licence—yes, it was really a coffee shop), having a peaceful green tea with my parents.

I tipped my cup to drink the very last drops, and because it had such a wide top, it almost covered my whole face. I peeked over the rim and thought, this feels like a moment from a children’s book. I laughed and told my parents, “There’s a story in this cup somewhere.” And just like that, Sedrick started to take shape.

A boy who might just get lost in a giant teacup… a boy who could turn ordinary moments into magical adventures… That was the beginning.

From one cup of tea to a whole world

When I got home (20 minutes later, with cold cheeks and warm thoughts), I sat down and began to write. Within two days, I had 6,000 words—enough for the start of one book… or maybe two… or maybe three! Sedrick’s stories poured out of me, inspired by the little details of everyday life.

I didn’t plan them. I just wrote, and Sedrick seemed to guide me. That’s the thing about magic—you don’t always see it coming.

Finding the perfect artist for Sedrick

After a year of writing and polishing, I needed someone to bring Sedrick’s world to life with pictures. I searched everywhere—asked on social media, spoke to illustrators—but nothing felt quite right. Eventually, I decided to stop looking and focus on something else (that “patience” thing people keep telling me about).

And then—just like in Sedrick’s stories—something surprising happened.

I was chatting to my friend Steph one day, catching up after months apart. At the end of our call, she showed me some of her artwork. I didn’t even know she could draw, but her doodles made my heart race. I knew instantly—she was the one to illustrate Sedrick!

I sent her the first story that very day, and she replied with sketches that looked exactly how I imagined him. When she said she wanted to work with me, I actually danced around the room.

A friendship, a dream, and a boy named Sedrick

Steph and I met years ago in our old corporate jobs, lost touch, then reconnected in 2021. We’ve shared similar life journeys, and now we share the joy of bringing Sedrick’s world to readers everywhere.

Two years after that awesome cup of tea, Sedrick is ready to meet you!

We hope you and your children enjoy Sedrick’s Adventures in Hopeland as much as we loved creating it. It’s a place where ordinary moments can turn into magical ones, where kindness matters, and where adventure is always just around the corner.
